Frequently Asked Questions about Moissanite
Moissanite is a naturally occurring mineral that is found in limited quantities in the earth. Moissanite was first discovered in 1893 in trace amounts carried to Earth by a spectacular meteorite. Natural moissanite is incredibly rare, so moissanite available today is laboratory-created (where they are produced in pieces large enough to cut into gemstones).
Is moissanite durable?
Moissanite is one of the toughest known gemstones which makes it perfect for an engagement ring (or a piece of jewellery that can be worn every day).
Does moissanite lose its sparkle or get cloudy?
Moissanite will not lose its sparkle over time. The clarity and colour of the stone won’t change through the years. Dirt and grime are the only common elements that may inhibit a ring’s sparkle but it can be cleaned easily (without affecting the true appearance of the stone). And moissanite does not become cloudy with age.
Does moissanite last?
Yes, it's a forever gemstone.
Moissanite is a strong, long-lasting gemstone. A moissanite should last for your entire life without losing its appearance. If you choose a setting that’s made from a high-quality metal such as gold or silver, a moissanite ring will last for a very long time.
What does lab created moissanite mean?
Lab created moissanite are grown in highly controlled laboratory environments using advanced technological processes that duplicate the conditions under which moissanite naturally develop. Lab created moissanite display the same physical, chemical, and optical characteristics as natural diamonds, and exhibit the more fire, scintillation, and sparkle.
It also means moissanites are 100% conflict free.
Why doesn’t Gems of Elah provide GRA certificates like some sellers do?
Because we believe you deserve better than a questionable certificate. GRA certificates are not issued by any well-regarded independent lab and can be unreliable. Rather than give you something we don’t trust ourselves, we choose to give you a guarantee that has real value – our lifetime warranty. We want you to rely on the actual authenticity and performance of the stone, backed by our reputation, instead of a printed report that might be misleading. In short, we stand behind our product directly, so a GRA certificate simply isn’t necessary. Your confidence should come from the quality you see in the gem and the promises we make to you, not from an uncertified piece of paper.
How do I know my moissanite is real without a certificate?
You can rest assured that every moissanite from Gems of Elah is a real lab-grown moissanite of high quality. We carefully source and test our stones, so we guarantee authenticity. Remember, a paper certificate is not what makes a stone real – its actual properties do. Moissanite has unique characteristics (for example, it will pass a diamond tester for thermal conductivity but also shows double refraction under magnification). If you have any concerns, you are welcome to have your stone examined by an independent jeweller or appraiser. We’re confident it will be verified as genuine moissanite. And importantly, our lifetime warranty is there to back up its authenticity and quality for the long run.
What does the lifetime warranty cover?
Our Lifetime Moissanite Warranty covers any changes in the optical properties of your moissanite gemstone over time. In practical terms, this means we guarantee your moissanite will never lose its sparkle, fire, or clarity. If the stone were to become cloudy, change colour, or otherwise degrade in appearance through normal wear, we will replace it free of charge. This warranty gives you peace of mind that your gem will remain beautiful for life. (Please note that the warranty does not cover accidental damage or loss of the stone – for example, if the gem is chipped, scratched, or lost due to mishandling or trauma. Those situations are outside the scope of a quality guarantee. However, moissanite is very durable, so such issues are quite rare.) To make a warranty claim, you just need to provide proof of purchase and contact us – we’ll take care of the rest, ensuring you’re never left with a dull or damaged stone that was no fault of your own.
Can I get my moissanite certified or appraised elsewhere?
Yes, you can have your moissanite examined or appraised by a third-party gemmologist if you desire additional peace of mind. A professional jeweller or gemmologist can verify that the stone is indeed moissanite and confirm its quality characteristics. (Keep in mind that major gem laboratories like GIA generally do not issue standard grading reports for moissanite, since moissanite is a lab-created diamond alternative. GIA’s focus is on natural gems and diamonds, so they typically will only provide an identification report for moissanite, not a full grading). If you do want a documentation of your stone’s characteristics, some gem labs (for example, IGI or others) might offer a moissanite grading or identification service. However, this is usually not necessary for most customers. The important thing is that you bought from a reputable source (us!), and we have already ensured the quality. Our documentation (your invoice and the product details we provide) plus our lifetime warranty serve as strong proof of what you have. But ultimately, we support any decision that makes you most comfortable – you’re welcome to verify the gem, and we’re confident it will meet or exceed the stated specs.
What quality grades are Gems of Elah moissanites?
We use only premium quality moissanites. Typically, our stones are in the D–F colour range, which means they are colourless to the naked eye (D is the highest, purest white colour grade). They also have high clarity, usually graded around VVS (Very Very Slightly included) or better – which means any natural inclusions are microscopic and not visible without specialized magnification. Additionally, our moissanites are expertly cut for maximum brilliance and fire. We hand-select or specify stones that meet these top-tier criteria.

Is moissanite ethical & sustainable?
Moissanite is ethical and sustainable and have minimal impact on the environment. Diamonds on the other hand have come under fire in recent decades due to unethical practices in the industry. Moissanite is lab grown in a controlled environment (ensuring quality) and does not have any negative impact on the environment and the society.
